8 MIN READ
- Renewal season runs August 1 – October 31. CRTPs must complete 20 CE hours and renew registration before the deadline.
- The 20 hours break down as: 10 federal tax law, 3 federal updates, 2 ethics, 5 California tax law.
- Registration costs $33 plus a $2 processing fee. Miss the deadline and a $55 late fee applies, with a hard final cutoff of January 15.
- Your $5,000 surety bond and PTIN must both be current to renew.
California gives its tax preparers the earliest renewal deadline in the country, and every year a wave of CRTPs finds out on November 1. The renewal window opens August 1 — here is the full sequence, in the order that avoids rework.
§1Complete your 20 CE hours
Your 20 hours must come from a CTEC-approved provider, be uploaded to the CTEC database by that provider before you renew, and cover four buckets:
SCHEDULE B — CTEC 20-HOUR BREAKDOWN
| Subject | Hours |
|---|---|
| Federal tax law | 10 HRS |
| Federal tax law updates | 3 HRS |
| Ethics | 2 HRS |
| California tax law | 5 HRS |
| Total | 20 HRS |
Done right, these same hours also earn your IRS AFSP Record of Completion — California preparers are exempt from the AFTR, so one course covers both credentials.
§2Verify your $5,000 bond
Your surety bond must be active at renewal, and you will report any claims against it. If it lapsed, reinstating takes days, not minutes — check it in early October, not on Halloween.
§3Confirm your PTIN
CTEC and the IRS cross-reference your PTIN, and a current PTIN is a condition of CTEC renewal. Renew it as soon as the IRS opens the window in October so your CE hours report cleanly — our step-by-step PTIN renewal guide covers the 15-minute process and the Circular 230 consent that trips people up.
§4Pay and renew at CTEC.org
Once your provider reports your hours, log in to CTEC.org, pay the $33 registration fee plus $2 processing, and confirm your details. Screenshot the confirmation — it’s your proof if anything mismatches later.
October 31 is the standard deadline. Miss it and you pay a $55 late fee on top of standard renewal fees, you cannot legally prepare returns for pay until your registration is current, and the final cutoff is January 15 — after that, you’re starting over with the 60-hour qualifying education course. Preparing returns for pay without current registration risks penalties of up to $5,000 per violation.
CTEC 20-Hour Renewal Course
All four subject areas in one self-paced course, hours reported to CTEC and the IRS for you. Available in English and Spanish.
§5Frequently asked questions
Do my CTEC hours count toward the IRS AFSP?
Yes. CRTPs are AFSP-exempt preparers, so your 20 CTEC hours satisfy the 15-hour exempt AFSP requirement when your PTIN is current and you complete the Circular 230 consent. See the full breakdown in our CTEC vs. AFSP guide.
What if my hours are reported after October 31?
Course completion, provider reporting, and your CTEC payment all need to land by the deadline. Choose a provider that reports quickly and don’t finish your course on the final night.
I’m brand new — does this checklist apply to me?
Not yet. First-time preparers register with CTEC after completing the 60-hour qualifying education course. Start with our complete roadmap to becoming a California tax preparer; this checklist takes over from your second year on.
