Enrolled Agents

The IRS mandates that Enrolled Agents (EAs) complete 72 hours of Continuing Education (CE) over a three-year period, with a minimum of 16 hours annually, including 2 hours in Ethics.

Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP)

To obtain the AFSP Record of Completion, non-exempt preparers must complete 18 hours of Continuing Education (CE) annually by December 31. This includes the 6-hour Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) course and exam, 10 hours of federal tax law topics, and 2 hours of ethics.

Exempt vs Non-Exempt

Exempt preparers, such as CPAs, EAs, and attorneys, are exempted from taking the Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) course and exam. Non-exempt preparers are those who do not hold these specific credentials and must successfully complete the AFTR to earn the Certificate of Completion and gain limited rights to represent clients.
