How long does a paper PTIN renewal on Form W-12 take?
A paper PTIN application or renewal on IRS Form W-12 can take about six weeks to process, according to IRS guidance. Older IRS items cite four to six weeks. Plan on six weeks, because a late PTIN can delay the AFSP Record of Completion.
How long does online PTIN renewal take?
Renewing online through the IRS Tax Professional PTIN System takes roughly 15 minutes, per the IRS. The IRS has moved the sign-in to a secure option through ID.me, so set up that account before renewal season to avoid delays.
When does a PTIN expire?
Every PTIN expires on December 31 and must be renewed to stay active. Renewal opens in mid-October for the following year. Paid preparers who skip renewal cannot prepare federal returns for compensation with an expired PTIN.
Does the AFSP require an active PTIN?
Yes. The Record of Completion is generated only after your hours are complete, your PTIN is renewed for the coming year and you consent to the Circular 230 obligations. Read why a PTIN is required for the Record of Completion.
Verify the current fee on the IRS PTIN page before paying; it changes by year. PTIN rules are federal and identical in every state.
